My name is Kyla Susanne Paine and I am a district autism teacher. Using an applied behaviour analysis framework, I create programs, case manage and teach children with autism that also present with challenging behaviours. To this end I conduct functional behaviour assessments, and design and implement positive behaviour support plans. I am passionate about inclusion and believe in the right of every child to be educated in the least restrictive environment that serves their needs. For the past two years I have been enrolled in the Masters of Education in Special Education at the University of British Columbia. This portfolio represents my academic and professional development for the duration of my studies. It further outlines my future professional goals.

Before you proceed, I hope you’ll pause a moment to read the following poem by Special Education revolutionary and hero Dr. Marc Gold. I was introduced to it by Dr. Pat Mirenda. It inspires me to keep working towards inclusion by continually learning, exploring and honing my assessment and instructional techniques:

If you could only know me
For who I am instead of for who I am not
There would be so much more to see
Cuz there’s so much more that I’ve got.

So long as you see me as mentally retarded
Which supposedly means
something I guess
There’s nothing you or I could ever do
To make me a human success.

Someday you will know
That tests aren’t built to let me
stand next to you.

By the way you test me
All they can do is make me look bad
Through and through.

And some day soon I’ll get my chance
When some of you finally adapt.

You’ll be delighted to know
That though I’m MR
I’m not at all handicapped.
